Bernardine Evaristo has worked with Penguin in selecting six lost and hard-to-find books by Black writers to start a new series, Black Britain: Writing Back.

I was commissioned to illustrate the book cover for the title The Fat Lady Sings by Jacqueline Roy, a groundbreaking novel exploring the intersection between race, class and mental health in the UK.

The brief required me to create a fresh new package for the book that would appeal to readers of Bernardine Evaristo, Brit Bennett and Jacqueline Woodson. They felt that my delicate linework, graphic shapes and muted colour palettes in your would fit with the book’s sensitive exploration of female friendship and mental health.

For more information on the series read Penguin’s article here.

“THE DESIGN FOR THE COVER IS WONDERFUL. I LOVE ITS EXUBERANCE, COLOURFULNESS AND THOUGHTFULNESS THERE TOO.

PLEASE LET THE ARTIST KNOW HOW MUCH I LIKE IT AND HOW RIGHT IT SEEMS FOR THE BOOK.”
